PODCAST: Ramaphosa speaks out against xenophobia

Dr. Rebecca Walker, Research Associate at the African Centre for Migration & Society, spoke to John Maytham about the measures announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last night to address illegal migration.

Her assessment: “We expected the president to say all the right things, but ultimately he used the focus on illegal migration to pivot away from taking responsibility for the country’s problems. It is an obvious strategy, and the state is playing exactly into what we expected.”

A reminder that scapegoating migrants distracts from governance failures.
