PODCAST: R300m Deportation Drive Under Fire as SA’s Socio-Economic Crisis Deepens
Dr. Rebecca Walker (Research Associate, African Centre for Migration & Society, Wits University) questions the effectiveness of the costly drive: “We have disrupted an economy that had people linked positively and negatively. We have also spent a lot of money that could have been fixed to address the structural challenges linked to migration and South Africa’s economy. The money spent did not address South Africa’s socio-economic challenges.”
The question remains: what was the aim of this strategy? If it was to reduce unemployment and ease pressure on services, the evidence suggests it has failed.
